Hess: Welcome to Smoky Mountain Saturday!!! We have a great show lined up for today, including the featuring 1st round action of the tournament to crown a new SMW Heavyweight Champion!! Coming to you live from the Mid-South Coliseum, in a special prime time slot! Let's head to the ring.......


WEST BRACKET---ROUND 1

(1) Ric Flair vs (16) The Greatest Bolo (local)
Flair gets the win with the quick tap out to the FIGURE FOUR LEGLOCK.

(8) Colonel Debeers vs (9) Rick Steiner
Steiner scores the first upset of the tournament, pinning Debeers after a DDT.

(5) Bison Smith vs (12) Al Costello
Costello looks lost without his partner and is pinned by Smith after the BISONTENIAL.

(4) Don Leo Jonathan vs (13) Davey Boy Smith
What has to be considered a major upset, Davey Boy picks up the win after the 3rd RUNNING POWERSLAM in the match.

Hess: Well, some unexpected developments, as both Colonel Debeers and DLJ are bounced from the first round of the tournament. Both Bison Smith and Ric Flair looked good in their matches as well........

(6) Ox Baker vs (11) Haystacks Calhoun
In a very physical match up (3 tokens apiece), Baker lands the decisive blow and pins Calhoun after a 2nd HEART PUNCH.

(3) Sgt. Slaughter vs (14) Adam Pearce
Slaughter gets Pearce to tap out after back to back COBRA CLUTCHES.

(7) Sabu vs (10) Arn Anderson
A great match that saw a lot of back and forth action. Sabu eventually gets a worn down Arn Anderson to tap out to the CAMEL CLUTCH.

(2) Big Van Vader vs (15) Playboy Buddy Rose
A good match that Rose had control of until it seemed like Vader had enough. Vader pins the Playboy after a VADER POWER BOMB.


Hess: Well the West Bracket 1st Round has come to a close. The 2nd half went as scheduled, with the top seeds advancing. We should have some intriguing matches for Round 2 of the West bracket. Now we will take a brief intermission, and we will be back with 1st Round action from the East bracket!!!!

EAST BRACKET----ROUND 1


(1) Jerry The King Lawler vs (16) Dennis Stamp (local)
To the delight of the crowd, Lawler pins Stamp with the PILEDRIVER.

(8) Austin Idol vs (9) The Mountie
Surprisingly, Idol is able to kick out of the use of the SHOCK STICK, but when Mountie goes to use it later in the match, the referee catches Idol with it in his hands after taking it away from The Mountie and he calls for the bell.

(5) Diamond Dallas Page vs (12) Roy Heffernan
Heffernan was beating Page senseless, until he misses a deathjump. DDP then hits the DIAMOND CUTTER out of nowhere to pick up the win.

(4) Barry Windham vs (13) Scott Steiner
Windham manages to get the fairly easy win after he locks in the SLEEPER.


Hess: Some really good matches in the first round. The Mountie manages a small upset when Austin Idol gets DQ'd, but the other matches the higher seed prevailed. Let's head back to the ring!!


(6) Curt Hennig vs (11) Gorilla Monsoon
The first disaster in the tournament happens as both men are eliminated from the tournament after a DOUBLE COUNT OUT.

(3) Bruiser Brody vs (14) Brian Christopher
Brody makes quick work of Christopher, and pins him after a JUMPING KNEE DROP.

(7) Christopher Daniels vs (10) Dynamite Kid
A high flying match that could go either way. Daniels pins a battered Dynamite Kid (5 tokens) after the LAST RITES.

(2) Randy "Macho Man" Savage w/ Elizabeth vs (15) Gillberg
This match was all Savage as the Macho Man gets the easy win after the FLYING ELBOW DROP.

Hess: Well, the 1st round of action has come to a close, as a great night of matches is in the books. The glaring match that stood out tonight was the Curt Hennig/Gorilla Monsoon match where both men eliminated each other. What this does is basically gives the very dangerous Bruiser Brody a bye into the quarterfinals of the tournament. And that is not a man I would want to deal with, especially a well rested Brody. A great match to open the card. After Sabu misses the TRIPLE JUMP MOONSAULT, the Sarge manages to lock in the COBRA CLUTCH for the 3rd time in the match to finally pick up the win.

"Nature Boy" Ric Flair vs Curt Hennig
Flair gets the pin on Hennig after the PIN WITH ROPES.

Colonel Debeers vs Big Van Vader
Vader puts down Debeers in dominating fashion after the VADER POWER BOMB.

Brian Christopher vs Don Leo Jonathan
DLJ picks up the competitive win after the MORMON SWING.

Half-A-Ton vs The Kangaroos
The Kangaroos are disqualified after Costello hits Monsoon with a wooden boomerang he brought to the ring after Monsoon hit the AIRPLANE SPIN AND SLAM on Heffernan. Calhoun was extremely beat down in this match (4 tokens).

"The Enforcer" Arn Anderson vs Bison Smith
Arn picks up the win over Smith after the GORDBUSTER.

The Mountie vs Diamond Dallas Page
DDP gets the win after the DISCUS CLOTHESLINE. After the match, DDP is standing on the 2nd rope, posing for the crowd. The Mountie comes up behind him and zaps him with the SHOCK STICK. He gives DDP a second zap with the SHOCK STICK before security rushes out and makes the save on the fallen DDP.

The fight breaks out outside the ring, and Baker gets caught hitting Slaughter with a steel chair.

The best match by far in the young history of SMW. Both men took a heavy beating and were bloodied (Sabu 5 tokens, Vader 6 tokens). Vader finally gets the win after a 2ND ROPE SPLASH after Sabu missed the triple jump moonsault for the second time in the match.

Hess: All the top seeds move on in the matches, but Sabu put on one heck of a show against the much larger man Vader. When we come back, our next round of matches!!!

A back and forth match that produces the first upset of the evening as the Mountie pins Lawler after the SHORT ARM CHOKE SLAM. He goes to get the shock stick to attack Lawler after the bell, but DDP comes through the crowd and chases The Mountie away.

Diamond Dallas Page (5) vs Barry Windham (4)
DDP looked a little worn out from the previous run-in and he gets pinned after 2 SWEETWATER SUPLEXES.

Bruiser Brody vs Gillberg
Gillberg calls out Brody, wanting him to be "first". Brody has little trouble disposing of Gillberg with the JUMPING KNEE DROP. Brody attacks Gillberg some more after the bell, Don Leo Jonathan comes out and chases Brody away to the delight of the crowd.

Christopher Daniels (7) vs Randy Savage (2) w/ Elizabeth
Another huge upset as Daniels hits the BME, and then follows it up with the ANGELS WINGS to get the huge win over Savage.


Hess: Well some unexpected developments in the tournament, especially the East Bracket as both the 1 and 2 seeds fall in the tournament. What will next week produce?
